Average fares out of McGhee Tyson Airport dropped 10.3% during the first quarter of 2009 as compared to the same time period in 2008. Knoxville had the third-highest fares in the U.S. according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics during first quarter of 2008 and has now moved down to tenth. "Although we have a ways to go to get to the national average of $314.94, we are moving in the right direction," said Danni Varlan, President of East Tennesseans for Airfare Competition.
One of the main reasons for the improved average fares is the US Airways lower fare program that was introduced in January 2009. Low fare carriers AirTran Airways and Allegiant Air are also contributors to the decrease in average air fares.
Did you know that searching on travel sites, such as Orbitz or Travelocity, does not always give you the most direct or least expensive flight? Before buying a ticket, check the airline’s Website for sales, special promotions, etc.
