Wednesday June 15, 2011
$500,000 DOT GRANT will need matching funds from community.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn.- When the Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority (MKAA) and East Tennesseans for Airfare Competition received notification on February 18, 2010 from the Department of Transportation (DOT) that a Small Community Air Service Development Grant had been awarded to the airport in the amount of $500,000, we knew we had some work ahead of us.
The DOT granted awarded to MKAA and ETAC for $500,000 came with the stipulation that we would match that grant through money raised by our community. ETAC has the job of organizing our community resources through business travelers to raise $500,000 so that we can receive the federal grant money. "We have to raise and spend our match money before we receive the $500,000 grant," Danni Varlan explained. The grant is written specifically for service from Knoxville to Baltimore/Washington International Airport for low fare service. "This grant will be very important for supporting MKAA's efforts to bring low fare air service from Knoxville to Washington, DC.", said Varlan
Out of the 84 communities that submitted grant proposals, the DOT awarded just nineteen grants. The total amount awarded across the nineteen communities was $6,445,450. The grant received by ETAC and MKAA will aid in the community's efforts in trying to bring additional low-fare service to the region's most demanded markets from McGhee Tyson Airport.
